On August 10, Cedar Rapids, Iowa was hit with a derecho. A derecho is a widespread, long-lived, and fast-moving type of violent storm known for straight-line winds. During this storm, wind gusts reached as high as 112 miles per hour. Every person in Cedar Rapids and the surrounding communities have been affected by this in some way. 

The extreme weather damaged homes, churches, and businesses. It also caused widespread power outages for more than 1 million people; threw vehicles into the air, destroyed farms, collapsed trees, and caused many people to lose their homes.
