At New Covenant, we believe children above the age of 7 who recognize they have sinned and need forgiveness, have confessed their sin and asked Jesus to be Lord of their life, and are seeking to grow in faith can be baptized.
When talking with your child about baptism, here are some good questions and answers to help you understand if this is the right next step for your child:
What is baptism?
Baptism is a special celebration where a follower of Jesus shows the world that He is their King and forever friend. In our church, baptism is done by quickly placing your whole body under the water for a second. This is a picture of leaving our old, dead life of sin buried, and coming alive in new life as a child of God.
Do I need to be baptized to go to heaven?
Absolutely not. You are saved for heaven by trusting in Jesus and receiving His gift of eternal life for free. However, Christians are encouraged throughout the New Testament to be baptized and so we encourage every believer to obey the word of the Lord.
I was baptized as a tiny baby—does that count?
Baptism is a personal decision. Some people choose to be baptized again when they are old enough to remember and to understand what it means to follow Jesus.
What happens if I say I want to be baptized?
You and your parents will have the opportunity to attend a class to answer all your questions! Ask any leader in NCBC Kids and they can help you learn more.
I am scared of talking in front of people—do I have to do that?
No. Your pastors will want to know that you understand what baptism means and hear that you believe in Jesus. You may tell your faith story in person or on a video but you do not have to.
I don’t want to do this in front of a lot of people. Does it have to be a big event?
No. You can arrange a smaller, more private time for baptism. However, just like a wedding, it’s a joyful occasion to share how much you love Jesus with others.
