Life is full of transitions - some exciting, some nerve-wracking. Whether it's starting college, retiring, or entering a new phase of life, change can leave us feeling uncertain. But in these moments, we would do well to follow the example of Samuel in 1 Samuel 12.
As Israel transitioned from judges to kings, Samuel reminded the people of God's unwavering faithfulness throughout their history. Despite Israel's cycles of sin and rebellion, God consistently delivered them when they cried out to Him. Samuel's message is clear: No matter the circumstances, remember God's faithfulness.
This truth resonates just as powerfully today. Our greatest threat isn't external challenges, but a weak faith that leads us to forget God. When we lose sight of His character and provision, we're tempted to place our trust in empty idols - whether power, control, comfort, or approval.
The antidote? Cultivating a reverent fear of God by actively remembering His faithfulness. We can do this by:
Reflecting on our mortality to gain perspective on God's eternality
Marveling at creation to grasp God's vastness and creativity
Meditating on God's commands to recognize our need for His grace
As we remember God's faithfulness, our faith grows more robust. We're reminded that He is committed to us, having made us His people through Christ. This truth frees us from dread and cultivates a healthy reverence.
So in every transition and season of life, let's take Samuel's advice to heart. Let's fear God, serve Him faithfully, and continually consider the great things He has done. For no matter our circumstances, our faithful God remains the same.
